March Madness

March was a crazy month that seemed to just fly by. We spent a lot of time in the back yard with the nice weather. The first day of Spring break Soleil was sitting at her little table that we bought her and tried to get out of the chair that was a little too big for her. She ended up falling and hitting her chin on the dog bowl, splitting her chin open. It must not have hurt her too much because she stopped crying after she was picked up. But the wound wouldn't really stop bleeding. We took her to an emergency clinic and they decided she needed stitches. When they strapped her down to a papoose board she was NOT happy. It seemed like she was strapped down for ever! First they had to give her a lidocaine shot then wait for that to kick in...about 10 min. Then the Dr. came back and tried to stitch up her chin between her screams when she would breathe to scream some more. I didn't realize how difficult it would be to stitch up a chin in motion! All the while she was screaming, "mama! mama!". It just broke my heart because she couldn't understand what was going on. Robbie kept trying to blow in her face to cool her down since she was so mad and burning up. After they finally got all 5 stitches done her chin never seemed to bother her again. You can see the stitches and the wound in some of the pictures below.

The same day that she had her stitches we went to "The Little Gym" to celebrate Soleil's friend Victoria's 2nd birthday. You would have never know Sol had stitches that morning. She just loved the activities; the parachute, the bubbles, the balls, etc. We will need to go back again since she had so much fun!

The next day we left for our camping trip in the Arbuckle mountains in Oklahoma. We had a good time even though it was a little cold and rainy. Soleil seemed to love being outside and enjoyed finding cool rocks and sticks. She is such a little collector! She didn't do so well at night. She woke up crying a lot. I am not sure if she wasn't sure where she was or if she didn't like sleeping with Mommy and Daddy since she hadn't in a while. We slept on an air mattress which was nice, but we didn't like the wet morning dew feeling too much. There was a lot of mud in our campsite since it rained before we got there and then a little while we were there. Soleil was covered in mud by the end of the trip. She got a lot of hiking in and seemed to really hone her walking/running skills.

In March we also got to take Soleil to her circus: Cirque du Soleil! She was fascinated by the activity on stage. Only in the last ten minutes did Robbie and I start to worry that she wouldn't make it through the whole performance. Soleil was even in the spotlight for a minute. One of the performers was talking to her and saying how cute she was as part of the show! See, she was named well...she is such a star!

To finish off the month with a bang we had a wonderful lunch on a beautiful day at the Dallas Arboretum. Soleil went exactly a year ago with Grandpa Hurd to visit for the first time and now we were back again! This time we took Chris and Michael with us. We had a yummy picnic then walked around the grounds. Soleil enjoyed spending the day with some of her favorite people. She just soaked up all the attention!

March was the first time that Soleil went down a slide all by herself. Now she is hooked! She has no fear of launching herself off any slide. There is one at one of our local parks that has a little bump in the middle that actually launches Soleil into the air. She just loves it. It is also fun watching her catch some air and come down all smiles and asking for "mas".

We'll see when I can post again. I got a part in a local play again. I haven't been on stage for about 5 years. It is fun acting again. The play is William Inge's "Picnic". I have a small part, about 30 lines....which I should be memorizing right now rather than writing all this! Off I go!

Oops, Important January Info!!

I forgot to add one VERY important thing to the January post. A few days after the start of the new year Soleil started to walk all by herself more than just the few badly coordinated steps in 2006! We got them on video and we sent them to a few of you. I guess now that it is March, it seems like she has been walking forever and I forgot to add that to my January post. Maybe I should post updates a little more often when things are fresh in my mind!

Fly-by February

It seems like February was over even before it started! Soleil developed an ear infection in her second ear WHILE on antibiotics for her other ear infection...explain that one to me! So she had to be put on a stronger anitbiotic. It made her moody and gave her an awful diaper rash. In some of the pics you can see her sucking on the syringe we used for the medicine. She just loved to take her medicine and would always ask for "mas" (more) and get mad when she couldn't have more.

She found some good exploring areas. Some of her favorites were the kitchen cabinet (seen below) where she liked to go hide and eat snacks. Another was the dog crate whenever we would tell the pups "in the cage". Soleil would get in with them and when we had to drag her out she would scream. Guess she wanted to stay home with them! Her third favorite hang out place was between the bushes and the house out back.

We spent most of February outside since the weather was so nice. We started our organic garden by planting some tomatoes, onions, oats, and catnip. We tilled the vegetable garden and created an ornamental garden. We also bought an iron gazebo and moved our chimenea to a new spot in the yard. We enjoy the yard so much more now. It just feels happier! Soleil got a lot of practice sitting down to inspect everything she saw outside and standing back up again. She enjoys being outside so much that when it is raining and we have the door closed she bangs on the door!

Soleil got to wear her first band-aid and she didn't like it at all (see pic!). She sucked her thumb so much that the skin got thick on the knuckle and cracked. It was a deep cut and she would continue to suck it and stick her teeth into the wound. We had to put th band-aid on it to keep her from making it worse.
